WILMINGTON, Del. (NewsNation Now) – President-elect Joe Biden delivered a speech the day before Thanksgiving highlighting the challenges Americans face on this vacation with public health officials pushing against travel and large gatherings.

Biden's speech from Wilmington, Delaware, Wednesday, encouraged Americans and focused on the sacrifices they make over the holiday season.

"Gratitude – even in the face of suffering – has long been part of what Thanksgiving means in America," said Biden. "If you look back on our history, you can see that it was the most difficult of circumstances under which the soul of our nation was forged. And now we are facing another long, hard winter."

According to Johns Hopkins University, the US tops the global list of coronavirus cases with nearly 12.6 million. The death toll across the country is nearing 260,000 and millions are still traveling on vacation despite being told to stay at home and not gather outside of households.

According to the U.S. Transportation Security Administration, nearly 4 million people have undergone airport investigations since Saturday.

The trip ahead of Thanksgiving is increasing despite the COVID-19 warnings

Biden plans to spend Thanksgiving with a few family members at his Delaware home. The president-elect began the formal transition process to the White House this week after receiving the official go-ahead.

He confirmed Tuesday that his team was able to coordinate with the Trump administration on pandemic, vaccine distribution and national security. Biden plans to announce his business team and other key candidates next week, his transition team said on Wednesday.

The White House also gave Biden permission to receive the president's daily news broadcast.

"It was offered," Biden told reporters on Tuesday. “I didn't have it today. We will do it regularly. "

Despite his campaign attempts to invalidate the election results, this week President Donald Trump signed his administration's participation in the transition process. But he promised that his campaign would continue to fight to reverse the results.

Trump's legal efforts have largely failed in key battlefield states, most recently Michigan and Pennsylvania.
