HABPI Hosts Free Bike Ride Event – Gettysburg Connection

On Saturday, October 3, Healthy Adams Bicycle/Pedestrian, Inc. (HABPI) will hold its fifth annual “Ride for Trails” bike ride leaving from the Gettysburg Rec Park, 545 Long Lane, Gettysburg. This annual ride raises money for developing bicycling and walking trails in Adams County.

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s ride will be modified for participants’ safety. In addition, this year’s event will be free of charge in acknowledgement of the financial difficulties the pandemic has caused many. Donations will be accepted but aren’t required.

There will be three different routes for this year’s ride:

The first ride is a 12-mile route around the Gettysburg National Military Park (GNMP) and across Sachs Bridge that will be led by members of HABPI. Group size will be limited to 10, with multiple groups available if necessary to ensure proper spacing. This ride will depart the Rec Park at 9 a.m.

The second ride is a 25-mile route that will include Sachs Bridge and the GNMP as well as the country roads south of Gettysburg. This will be a “show & go” event, which means there is no mass start. Participants are asked to arrive any time after 8 a.m. to pick up a sheet of directions if needed. They then may start the ride at their convenience. The route will be marked with orange road arrows, and a rest stop will be available about halfway through the ride.

The third ride is a 40-mile route for those wanting to see a bit more of the beautiful countryside. This route will not be fully marked but directions and “Ride with GPS” maps are available on our website. We will also have directions available for participants to pick up after 8 a.m. on the day of the ride. A rest stop will be available midway through the ride.

To maintain the safety of the event, no lunch will be offered this year. And to keep costs down, T-shirts will not be offered. Riders are asked to complete an online waiver/registration form to facilitate check-in on the day of the ride.

To register and to access maps and directions, visit HAPBI.org and click on the ride link on the home page.

Anyone interested in making a donation to support trail development in Adams County can mail a check to HABPI, c/o M. Bramel, 355 S. Howard St., Gettysburg, PA 17325 or drop off a check on the day of the ride.
